The Rose Garden Art Statement

Fusion shakes me as a ‘blue’ painted six-foot hanbok called Truly, I Never Doubted You, resuscitates my dream of holding my Korean granddaughter born on my birthday. Three paintings coalesce to create a ‘rose’ cashmere silk hanbok, their titles fusing into a haiku prayer: Diva standing tall, truly I never doubted, you hold my dream seed.

The impetus for The Rose Garden began when the roots of my coral climbing rose were decimated overnight by voles. Simultaneously ~ at the birth of his daughter, my son cut ties with me, his father, brothers, aunts, uncles, all of us at once. My calls, texts, and gifts sent to my new granddaughter went unanswered for a year. My paintings turned blue. My feet frozen, numbed by pain, I can’t stand to paint.

Breaking my silence to speak of my unspeakable pain, women reach out with their prayers and stories. I am not alone! Women are a vessel for love, holding pain. Compelled to return their prayers, I reach out to embrace mothers, daughters, granddaughters, great-grandmothers, all with heART prayers.

Digging through raw emotion just below the surface, I express feelings with color. Releasing hope, I repaint ‘blue’ paintings with a ‘rose’ palette. Fusing spirit, the ultraviolet rose with primal earth energy opens the heart center green.

Chakra color energies withheld in my body release a kind of automatic writing through my heart and hand. I carve willow charcoal drawings into thick wet impasto oil then draw with oil paint stick on Belgian linen imprinted and soaked with color. I grind raw pastel pigments into handmade paper collage, and journal dreams that morph into haiku prayers.

Sarah Muehlbauer in a review for Coda Magazine

Coda Magazine / Magic of Color

"Fagan’s expressionistic style comes from a creative process that’s devotional, cultivated through subtle repetition and awareness. The day we speak, it is solstice, and she remarks on the day as one of subtlety, the most internalized day of the year, an ideal time to refine the balance of warm and cool, light and shadow within her works-in-progress. This fine attunement to process and nature supports the artist’s genuine resolution to distill an ineffable experience into aesthetic form, offering viewers a witnessing and recognition of their spiritual-emotional life."

A Freshman art student at East Carolina University, Dorothy Fagan superimposed a mountain landscape over a woman's body, unwittingly painting the conundrum she faced in moving mountains to own authority of her artistry. Unfolding in her art, we see pigments and grit dissolving, hear our own stories, and feel love rise from within.

During the pandemic, Fagan’s mural The Crossing, (exhibited in Milan Fashion Week 2020 DressME Exhibition at M.A.D.S Gallery, Milan, Italy) envisions new turf on the other side of global transformation as a reverse coloring book. Rather than coloring inside the lines, if we scribble, color emotions first ~ we release withheld energy that supports the heart.

Fagan’s paintings and textiles are collected by Musee de La Grande Vigne, Dinan, France, Longwood Art Museum, Farmville, Virginia, City University of New York, U Mass Memorial Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Camp LeJeune Mental Health Center, Towne Bank, AAA, and have been in exhibitions at the Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of Canada, the Copley Society, Boston, MA, the National Arts Club, NY, the Virginia Museum, Richmond, the Hermitage Museum, Norfolk, VA, and Virginia Contemporary Museum of Art.

She holds a B.F.A. from East Carolina University in Printmaking and Painting, and an American Masters Painting Mentorship with Robert Bowers Mayo, Richmond, Virginia.

Born in Morristown, New Jersey, she lives in Virginia with her husband and dog, and has three sons and seven grandchildren.
