If you feel the energy of my colors deeply, I've designed a life-affirming, heart-felt expression especially for you.
The Aquifer Embodied
I painted over this oil painting. Yet I still feel something I'm drawn to. There's a feeling I can taste. I'd painted it in a tiny watercolor thumbnail in my journal twenty years ago.
This week, I've been journaling only to discover the grit I feel so compelled to express in charcoal — is the gift I received from a past life sister. I've settled all the emotional ups and downs of life, so I was surprised to realize it's time to acknowledge her and her gift of color.
A woman named Patsy Mae lived and died a domestic slave in Tennessee in 1861, burned to the ground locked in a shed. Through her experience, I can taste the colors and feel compelled to make my marks with gritty charcoal, drawn, etched, carved into the warp and weft of linen.
Rise Sister Rise (in process)
In process on the floor of my studio today, I am assembling the first goddess gown — Rise Sister Rise — in gratitude for the gift of healing color.
I've been mulling this idea of goddess gowns for ten years — and now the first one is emerging.
She's twelve feet tall, created with painted linen textile collage that's been deconstructed and reconstructed three times. She has one long arm that waves of the aquifer, the other blooms in vibrant violet purples, capped by a turquoise cuff.
And today of all days, my curator Ainhoa in Madrid, emailed me about an opportunity to work with a group that examines where art belongs and how placement shapes context, meaning, and value, including the representation and placement of contemporary art in architectural, hospitality, and institutional settings.
Which brings me back to Splendid, and my desire to follow this Splendid thread a little longer — because it connects to the Aquifer.
Splendid Artist's Linen Edition
I'm creating an Artist's Linen Edition of Splendid, to reopen the creative thread of presence of this piece. It will follow the same palette and textures as the portal from which it flows — yet diverge into its own unique interpretations with acrylic washes of iridescence and calligraphic drawings embedded throughout.
Each work in the edition a spontaneous, emotional creation. A pop of inspiration along the way may mean that an element of silk collage finds its way into your piece, and no other. Not a detour, a spark received only for you.
For decades my art has been deeply tied to the sun, moon, and stars. This is where my creative prowess comes from; the titles, colors, gestures, and faith that my hand moves in parallel with my heart across time and the cosmos.
This means that my Artist's Linen Editions are imprinted with the cosmos alignment on the day of its creation. Yes, it has its own birth chart!
Interwoven Artist's Linen Editions
And from Rise Sister Rise, knock me over with a feather, because I NEVER expected that the next Watershed Legacy Edition would be this!
Aquifer I & II
These two interwoven pieces have been in the studio all summer. It was not until I cut them in half that I began to unravel their significance.
The light lavender pastel linew went in AFTER I reconfigured the textile as a goddess gown. I stood over her on the floor and stroked them in. They felt like Aquifer, and then two days later they feel like meadow grasses emerging from water.
I remember standing in the shallows as the tide comes in, feeling marsh grasses undulating in the waves, sunlit by an evening glow.
And then it hit me all at once - a sublime feeling of being here, perched in the sun.
Artist's Legacy Editions
These earthy colors with deep blues, teals and lavender blush, balance the harmonies deep within. Shadows and light flicker, feeling more like a dance than grit. Painting helped me feel whole. And I hope it can guide you in the same journey home.
