What Goes into a Painting Commission?
Many of my commission clients begin their art commission journey with a logistical concern. Along the way they discover something much more magical.
When I create a commissioned painting, I expand my creative bubble to include you! This means you get to express yourself through the painting and my brush hand.
The truth is ... a painting cannot really be ordered in a different size and color! A work of heart and soul that you commission me to paint for you reflects your energy. If you and your spouse are commissioning the artwork together, it will marry your energies together.
To do this I open the incubation process to my clients. This enables us all to discuss and develop ideas before committing to the project. I've developed my process with rigor for guaranteeing satisfaction ~ even working for committees remotely across the country for many years!
At the end of our incubation period, I offer you several contract options if I feel there is sufficient alignment to complete a successful painting. If you wish to proceed with the project, you may put a deposit of 50% to initiate creation of your painting.
An Oversize Oil Painting
You may have found one of my oil paintings you love, but it's already sold. Or like this one, it's not the right size for your wall. That's what inspired this six foot painting for a home in California.
A client north of San Francisco asked me to paint a 6' x 5' canvas for his vacation home in the desert. He sent me photos of the desert house and we chatted via zoom.
With Photoshop, I was able to scale the inspiration painting (the 4' x 3' one on the left) into photos of his white marble fireplace, and offer him three size choices.
I shipped the finished painting to the west coast rolled, and worked with installation professionals in Los Angeles to stretch and install the painting on the marble fireplace.
Kathy wanted a painting to tie living and dining rooms together in their remodeled coastal home. She chose The Meadow as her inspiration piece, and we created a custom sized painting to fit over the sideboard perfectly and cover the electric panel box on the wall!
"The painting arrived today and it’s wonderful! We can imagine which building is the one we stayed in, had dinner on the serene patio overlooking the water, and took the elevator down to the beach. We can visualize Rob’s mom coming ashore on the tender from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship docked in the harbor. It’s all there and all lovely. Thank you very much!" Kathi ~ Irvine , CA
An Oversize Watercolor Painting
Kathi found one of my paintings from Italy and wished it could be larger, large enough to hang over her sofa! We met via zoom and chatted about being in Sorrento. She explained to me what she loved and how she wished the 11" x 14" watercolor could be bigger ~ as big as 36" x 60!"
I showed her my mixed media fusion paintings and explained how they would allow me to create the scale of a watercolor without the need for glass. To guarantee the finished painting would fit into her living room perfectly, I ordered a Benjamin Moore paint chip to match her wall and painted the edge of the finished canvas to coordinate.
Question: What kind of oil painting could live in this space?
Multi Canvas Painting for a Two Story Wall
Homes with oversize walls and high windows present big design questions when it comes to artwork. A client from North Carolina had a very uniquely designed home with a corner window and dominating stone fireplace.
With large high windows the first thing art needs to do is bring the focal point back into the room. Correctly scaled and placed paintings use bold, grounding colors to bring the eye back down to earth and center conversation in the room.
In this example, three horizontal abstract paintings inspired by the lake beyond the windows stack up to the nine foot height. And offer the client flexibility to hang them individually as 3' x 6' paintings if they move to another home.
Answer: Paintings that welcome guests to the hearth!
By creating a square painting for the fireplace mantle at the same time, the perfect balance of subject, color, and pop bring the viewer from the entryway into the room to center them at the hearth.
What does your room look like? Which paintings do you love? You don't need to know what the finished painting will look like ~ that's my job!
Let's Chat! Because when you tell me your story, images flash to mind. When you talk I see colors! These are the sparks of Light in your heart that show me that I can paint for you!
Join me for an incubation chat to see if commissioning a painting is right for you.
We'll chat about your reasons for wanting a commission. And have a look at the space where you envision hanging your painting.
If I see sparks, I will offer you several proposals to choose from. If you choose to proceed with the project, you may put a 50% deposit on the proposal of your choice and schedule your painting. I am accepting commissions for my 2021-22 schedule now.
