Dorothy began painting coastal marsh landscapes when she moved to Mathews County, Virginia in 2000. She had stopped painting in 1995. At the depths of depression she'd emptied her studio and locked the door. Her world without painting was quiet. Dreams became lucid and overtook her waking world.
Moving footsteps from the Chesapeake Bay, she welcomed the fresh air. Encouraged by new friends, she picked up her paintbrush after a six year hiatus. Her artistic skills were worse than rusty. Accomplishments of art school and national juried exhibitions seemed to be erased. The marks she made were awkward, colors flat.
She adopted a narrow strip of sand in the Bethel Beach Sanctuary as her studio. There she discovered her new mantra ~ head in the clouds, feet in the sand.
"Something about kicking my shoes off in the dunes made me feel like a girl, untethered."
Quietly she learned to paint again, matching colors to clouds, water, and marsh. For twelve years she painted en plein air, slowly recognizing the symbolism of standing in the marsh looking heavenward, as her quagmire of ptsd realeased it's grip on her. In contrast to painting enclosed gardens while her mother was ill, this time she was ready for more than solace from the Creator.
Journaling dreams and paintings, Dorothy discovered striking connections between her dream world, her paintings and real life.
At the risk of being thought crazy, she kept her insights to herself the best she could. Going way outside the lines helped her put past lives to rest. By 2013 she felt complete with painting this series. Not knowing where to look for new inspiration, she applied for a residency in France.
