Pastels are my primary language ~ pastels feed me inspiration for my oil paintings and textiles. In this gallery, you'll see thumbnail studies for oil paintings, and pastels on handmade collage that inspire my painted textiles. I create a customized surface texture and under-painting by building up layers of handmade paper and textiles, then washing acrylic colors with transparent gesso to establish the foundation for pastels and oil paint. The transparent gesso provides the tooth necessary to hold pastel pigment without fixative.
This is a process I began developing in the early 90s for my oversize pastels. My foundational underpainting grounds me and the viewer in the field of the painting. Today I am using it with oversize oils on canvas and textiles.
I received my first set of pastels when I was 12! In 1979 I was elected to The Pastel Society of America, when my pastel Two Sisters was accepted into the International Exhibition at the National Arts Club in NYC. My pastels grew in scale, culminating in a 10' diptych, Rainbows in the Sky, permanently installed at Longwood Art Museum.
