The Olive Branch
Playful Colors & Patterns in a Quilt Design
Letting go of previous painting styles, Fagan sought fresh inspiration with her retreat. Giving herself time to paint unrestrictedly allowed her to fuse styles and color ideas with her love of fiber and fabrics. In this painting, one can see it actually developing as the quilts on the clothes line and hanging flower basket begin to all look like patterned fabrics juxtaposed in a quilt of color.
"This painting began as a realistic alley view with the hanging flower basket. In a dream, I saw the quilts, translucent in the light, layered one behind the next. Painting them was wonderfully fun to play with the colors and shapes, I hope my joy shows in the painting!"
This painting is particularly important because of its pivotal role in Dorothy's ever-developing artistic vision.
Oil on Linen, wired to hang unframed
20" x 16" x 1.5"
When she travels, Dorothy paints on unstretched linen for its light-weight ease to pack. Returning home, she mounts it on a cradled wood panel. Edges are 1 1/2" deep, painted charcoal violet, matte finish. This shadow edge contrasts with the shimmering satin painting and creates a stunning contemporary, frameless presentation. If you wish to have this piece framed, Dorothy recommends a striking, gold float frame for a clean, contemporary style. (select below, not shown, email for photo)
