Color Harmonies & Intricate Texture
As if painting with pastels, Dorothy builds colors and textures on the linen canvas with stiff layers of pigment. Letting the eye mix the colors is a style she has employed for decades. If the eye mixes colors, the viewer is energized, she believes engaging others in the creative process is critical.
"While Jim drives, I sit in the passenger seat and paint the passing landscape in my mind' eye. I came home to my studio in Tuscany each day with golden leaves sparkling against the turquoise sky. There was nothing to do but paint them!"
Fagan also used watercolor studies in composing this oil painting. Transparent watercolor is a huge departure from opaque mediums like oil and pastel, again representing an important development in the artist's work.
Oil on Linen, wired to hang unframed
20" x 16" x 1.5"
When she travels, Dorothy paints on unstretched linen for its light-weight ease to pack. Returning home, she mounts it on a cradled wood panel. Edges are 1 1/2" deep, painted charcoal violet, matte finish. This shadow edge contrasts with the shimmering satin painting and creates a stunning contemporary, frameless presentation. If you wish to have this piece framed, Dorothy recommends a striking, gold float frame for a clean, contemporary style. (select below, not shown, email for photo)
