Much of Dorothy's work in Tuscany involved color ideas. Toward the end of her trip, she began creating color quads. It was these sets of four colors that influenced the palette of this painting, causing its shift from a cool to warm palette.
"There was something intriguing about a section of a plein air painting I had made. I decided to explore it by painting it larger on this canvas. As I did so, the palette shifted from predominantly greens to reds!"
After creating studies for this work on her first Tuscan retreat, Dorothy began painting this oil on linen during her most recent trip. Returning to Virginia, she completed the final version at home.
Oil on Linen, wired to hang unframed
14" x 11" x 1.5"
When she travels, Dorothy paints on unstretched linen for its light-weight ease to pack. Returning home, she mounts it on a cradled wood panel. Edges are 7/8" deep, painted charcoal violet, matte finish. This shadow edge contrasts with the shimmering satin painting and creates a stunning contemporary, frameless presentation. If you wish to have this piece framed, Dorothy recommends a striking, gold float frame for a clean, contemporary style. (select below, not shown, email for photo)
