"Tapping into my mother's love, I extend the colors and designs of my paintings to wrap myself and friends. Wrap myself in these fabrics feels reassuring, like being a girl again with Mom's arms comforting me. Whether it's a scarf, jacket, or art quilt ~ the fusion of color and texture resonates deeply."
Important influences on Fagan's painting, derive from her affinity for textures and fabric. Comfort food for the soul, working with soft elements touches her at a visceral level, enabling her to access to a deep emotional connection to womanhood, mother, sister, self. Recent works explore the proliferation of #metoo, as in her Ruby Slipper series.
Inspired by her mother Pauline, Dorothy learned to sew, knit, crochet, embroider as a child. By the time she graduated high school, she was designing fabrics, her own dresses, skirts, slacks, jackets and vests for herself, as well as clients.
In her studio she prints paintings onto silk and Belgian linen with a fabric printer, to create commissioned wall pieces for the surgical center at Boston Children's Hospital, and U Mass Memorial Hospital. Award quilts fashioned from appliqued fabrics, fiber-reactive dyes on linen, or hand painted with iridescent paints ~ mix media with painting, collage, fiber, and design.
