"Watching the trauma of students at the school shootings ~ in a split second, my hands are again bound as my head smashes into the floor, killer's knife at my throat."
The trauma these kids will have to process in the coming days and years breaks my heart. It makes me realize how we are all traumatized by the news every day . . . and how art can really make a huge difference for all of us.
When a mountain weighed down on me in 1995, life became so dark that I gave all my paintings away and stopped painting. I became invisible.
Yet the Creative flame could not be extinguished. I felt it as a yearning, an inexplicable urge for color, to paint, to sing out loud.
BUT WHEN I PICKED UP THE BRUSH I COULD NO LONGER PAINT! My strokes were awkward, colors muddy. No longer at my fingertips were the paintings that had brought me acceptance into The Pastel Society of America, American Artist's Professional League, Salmagundi Club, the Pastel Society of Canada and all the others.
I had to start all over again.
Cascading Dreams (aka Lavender Sunset)
The end of my healing journey commenced in France. in 2013, awe-struck with this vision of Cascading Dreams my first day in Provence, I shifted into overdrive at the sight of ancient stone and terra cotta buildings, sprawling down into the landscape, from the town of Gordes. Romanced by a mountain encrusted with layers of civilization, I forgot about the mountain and what had caused it, and wrote a book called, Joy's Garden.
I began painting the juxtaposition of structures sprawling into fertile fields. For five years, I tweaked colors in a series of "Cascading Dreams" paintings, never quite satisfied. But I never really understood why I felt so compelled to paint them.
Finally returning from my retreat in Tuscany, I began to see lush jewel tones mixed between pastels, grounded with earthy golds, under the soft coral, Tuscan sun. I painted them in Cobalt Violet, Provence Blue, Quinacridone Violet, Vermilion, Deep Turquoise, and a myriad of greens. This triggered an avalanche.
Out they came. Dream after dream cascaded onto paper. Sparkly gems lined up on my drawing table.
It was only then, when the titles came to me, that I began to understand these paintings carry the healing prayers we all need right now.

Art has the power to express what words cannot. To reach in and touch us at the core of heart and soul, to release the pain. When trauma happens in the physical world, we search for answers. For a reality we thought we knew was there. The search may begin as an outward one, yet when healing happens it comes from The Creator within.
Art can help all of us reach inside ourselves to Create Peace in our own hearts moment to moment.
