Villages III

Attiendre, collection of the Musee de La Grande Vigne, France

Living on the Chesapeake Bay and travelling extensively in France and Italy, I draw on the connections I feel between dreams, ancient structures, and a heightened awareness of color fields.

Using a split-complementary palette of only six colors; two reds, two blues, and two yellows ~ in Provence I began aligning my aura, to the specific wavelengths of the chakras. For six years this has been my mantra. Full spectrum light aligns with this palette, automatically opening the flow of energy through the chakras. This uplifting energy can be experienced through the heart, while viewing paintings that align with one's own aura.

In my PEARLS SERIES, I use Charvin oil paint with palette knives to create emotional landscapes, etched with carved details. Often while painting I feel myself floating between heaven and earth in a kayak. Suspended in the reflections of the sky, floating on the surface of the flow ~ a carved twig or blade of grass ~ becomes a touchstone for the true reality of self within. You can see this heart connection with the Creator ~ in the contrast between ethereal, transparent layers of pigments ~ and scraped, carved, cross-hatched drawings grabbing hold in a fluid world.

This touchstone is an important threshold of my healing process. After the attempt on my life, I went in search of reality by painting en plein air. Because the trauma broke my connection to reality, I sought a new connection 'out there.' Ultimately rediscovering my own heart connection to the colors and images within, I am once again able to pick up where I left off the day before the assault ~ painting delicate landscapes from the Creator within my heart.

Similarly in my VILLAGES SERIES, I use willow charcoal to draw energetically into wet oil paint. My fascination with the intersection of human and divine, first showed up in France, in the juxtapositions of man-made and organic forms. During my residency. at Musee de La Grande Vigne in Dinan, I used soft, delicate twigs of willow charcoal to draw on raw linen. To fuse the charcoal on canvas, I layer it with washes of oil paint, oil pastel, and varnish.

Learning to channel my emotions ~ good and bad ~ I focus on using the gifts of passion given to me in the experiences of each and every step of life. Like many, I have been quick to disregard 'bad' feelings. Watching young singers share their stories, I began to recognize how a visual artist must also channel deep emotions to tap their resonance and sing.
