Peace > Brittany & Paris

A 4-week artist residency in 2013 took Dorothy along the Emerald Coast, the River Rance and into the village of Dinan. Her studio in Brittany was a stone cottage at La Musee de La Grande Vigne in Dinan, France. Painting in a vibrant village of cobbled stone streets and half timber houses dating to the Middle Ages, had a profound impact on Dorothy's artistry.

Seeking new direction for her art and life after completing her healing Earth Sky Water series, Dorothy felt inspired that patrons had volunteered to support her residency. They encouraged her to begin writing about her painting, sharing her thoughts and inspirations on a blog and ultimately wiritng a book about her residency.

Attiendre (Reaching), the painting selected to represent her in the Musee de La Grande Vigne's permanent collection, shows the new direction that began in France. Inspired by the juxtaposition of ancient structures and vibrant life, Dorothy painted with thinned oil washes and drew back into them with willow charcoal en plein air.

This fusion technique is further developed in larger works she painted after returning to the States. Her transition can been see in this collection from watercolor postcards she painted in Brittany and Paris, to plein air oils, and mixed media fusion paintings. Additional examples of her work in France were inspired by Provence.
